Chia Thick Hot Chocolate

A creamy and thick Italian-style hot chocolate (gluten-free!)

Hot chocolate

Chocolate = Switzerland right? It might be, but not when it comes to Hot Chocolate. For that, you have to go to Italy!
Or you have to prepare it yourself at home if you aren’t lucky enough to be in a real Italian Café, having to decide between a cappuccino or a thick, hot chocolate.

A while ago, I noticed my chia seed jar in the pantry, and I had the idea to try out if this might work: I warmed up some milk, added chia seeds and cocoa powder and blended everything. And it did very well! The result was as creamy and thick as I was hoping for.

By sprinkling some cinnamon and vanilla powder, I obtained a Christmassy aroma, perfect for this season! And here in my pics, I dressed up the creamy drink for my Instagram advent calendar. It just needs a Christmas Song…

Equipment

  • Blender

Ingredients

  • 4 dl rice milk, (see notes)
  • 4 tbsp chia seeds
  • 3 – 4 tbsp cocoa powder
  • ground cinnamon
  • vanilla powder

Instructions

  • Heat milk in a pot. Add cocoa powder, whisk and remove from the heat, add the chia seeds and let rest for a couple of minutes.
Blend – preferably with a high-speed blender- until smooth.
If the chia seeds are not completely blended (it might depend on your blender) you could consider straining the hot chocolate.
If needed warm up again and serve. Add some cinnamon and vanilla on the top.

Notes

Usually, soy milk is my first choice, but for this recipe, I prefer to use rice milk because I like its sweetness. Otherwise I think cow milk has a more suitable taste for this hot chocolate than soy milk.
